From my testing of the adapter with an IPad Air (4th gen - 2020), a power source isn't needed. Obviously, since you need to plug the adapter into your iPad/laptop/etc., using the adapter will drain off the battery. I have *not* tried doing something like a n HDMI in one side and VGA in another w/o being connected to at least device battery.

I know for a surface you might need power to help it and it will charge a surface when plug in. but a MacBook Pro you don’t need to. But I would recommend if your using a lot of power it would help out.
