You certainly do not need an app for a workout. The IC4 monitor tracks all of your activity....time, distance, calories, speed, cadence, etc. I ride with the peloton app most of the time, but enjoy my own workout for the longer rides.

The resistance is manually controlled, so if you ever want to fully experience an app enabled bike, this one won’t meet your needs. If you are just looking for a good bike that you can just jump on, spin for a while, this one allows for that. Plus, if you do want to connect it to an app, you can, but again, the app will not control your resistance.
