• Unlike with portable drives used with laptops, this one needs to be plugged in.

• The included external power supply supplies AC power to the drive. If I'm not mistaking the usb cable is used as an interface with the computer to exchange or transfer data.

• This comes with both a USB cable to connect to your computer, as well as an adapter to plug it into your wall. So you can use it w/o the adapter, as long as you have it plugged into/installed on your computer.
