A: The USB port cannot provide sufficient power to run the external hard drive. Therefore, an external power source is required.

A: Yes, it is compatible. You will have to format it using the disk utility in order for the macbook to be able to write to the drive. I have been using this for over two years (This drive and it's different variations) with no problem.
