You do have to set that up, as out of the box then plugged in it merely ext hard drive. However, you can set up a password and decide from more than one time of encryption. If you utilize this with a Mac, or connect to a router as a wireless back-up hub, then there's a second series of protection you will do, which you could utilize the same pass info, or create a different set for that application.
