Yes, it does have the availability to have it password protected in more than one way. You do have to set that up, as out of the box then plugged in it merely ext hard drive. However, you can set up a password and decide from more than one time of encryption. If you utilize this with a Mac, or connect to a router as a wireless back-up hub, then there's a second series of protection you will do, which you could utilize the same pass info, or create a different set for that application.

Yes, but I have not used this feature. When it is first used with Time Machine, it will ask you whether you want to use encryption.
