I'm confident that the answer is "yes". I have a WD external HD and have backed up three Macs to it using Time Machine, with a different folder for each Mac.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes you can by connecting it to your network via your router or just connect to each and setup Time Machine to use it, but you will have to manually swap it or share it from one Mac and connect the other. Connect to an Airport and connect to it after sharing it on the Airport, Lots of ways.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I'm sure you can. If on the second mac doesn't give you a backup option from time machine or if you don't notice anything automatically backingup in the external hardware, then no. It may backup partially also (bc of full memory). So I would double check what all it was able to backup on the second one.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes you can, you can even back up iPhones using the app.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Perhaps, if you had this connected on your network (via your router's USB connection) and used two separate partitions, one for each computer. I guess you could also connect this to one of the computers, create two partitions and then share one of the partitions on the network. Overall, I think it would be safer, since we are talking backups -- and safety is an issue -- to buy one drive for each computer you want to backup and provide time machine its own drive via a direct USB connection.
