It's because Macintosh uses a different file storage system than Windows computers. This drive is pre-formatted to work out of the box for windows computers, thus it won't have full compatibility with your Mac out of the box. I use my drive for both my windows and mac computers, but I had to divide it into two different file partitions.

In order to use this device as a backup drive on a Mac it needs to be Mac-formatted or you can also install Paragon-Driver on the Mac so it can be used on both operating systems. For more information, please visit the product support site on: https://www.seagate.com/support/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/backup-plus-hub/#getting_started Regards, Zac Seagate Support
