yes it is compatable. That is what I use mine for. It works fine

Yes, it will work fine for time machine, but you might want to consider how much space you need. Time machine does an incremental backup every 15 minutes so you probably want to have a HD twice as large as you iMac internal drive. I use an external RAID drive with 4 drives for redundancy.

Yes, I didn't need to format any special way. If you got one that wasn't for mac in particular than you may need to format with mac drivers.
