Typically the light shows activity. It will be solid when no data is being read or written to the drive and will flash based on the speed and amount of data being transferred.

The LEDs flash to indicate that data is moving to the drive or from the drive, the faster it blinks is an indication of how fast the data is being sent to or from the drive.

In general, rapid blinking on any drives indicates activity. A steady light is usually just indicating power and/or idle. Some drives will have a slow blink to indicate inactivity and/or sleep mode.
