You’ll be able to play Xbox one games and older but if you want to play next gen games you need the Xbox ssd.

While USB hard drives work fine, they only store those games, and you will need to transfer them to the SSD to play. However, backward compatible titles, including Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, work fine on USB drives. So yes and no. If it’s a next gen game no, it needs an ssd to play, if it’s Xbox one and 360 not optimized into next gen then yes it’s will play it. Otherwise you have to transfer that game from the external to the internal storage to play. Hope that makes sense
