It will work for PS5 - the PS5 has a dedicated process to port games to the external hard drive, and no, the game data will not be deleted. For games that you purchased on disk, you'll still need to insert the disk into the PS5 to play the game, but for games you bought digitally / downloaded, you can just load the game straight from the external hard drive.
