• you can use any external hard drive as long as it is usb 3.0 no matter what size; i have 2 8tb drives hooked to mine i'm going to upgrade to the 10tb hard drives soon.

• You will have about 7.2TB of storage after the Xbox has reformatted it.

• There is, of course, some space needed for the software, but it's not 500gb.
