you do not need to register the drive or get on the internet, you can use it like a regular drive, the other functionality are just extras

I think this particular drive was created to register and apply the extra warranty and extra recovery options that you pay more for. I think you can use the standard ones without data recovery as you desire. They are also less expensive. I always register them in the case that there is a problem but I can't imagine not being able to like you are talking about with the other ones, with the exception of this particular one designed to recover.
