The Seagate 4TB external drive does not need a separate power supply. I also find the drive to be quite reliable. I have no problems with these drives, and have used them for data storage and retrieval. There is one wire that hooks right into the USB port, and that is all that is necessary. Hope this helps your decision-making for this product.

As for plug and play it will show up within a minute or two on your computer without installing additional software but it does come with install package for support for additional features.
