“Will the smart remote work with newest Android-based phones? Wil these headphones work with other apps like the Headset Button Controller app that is on GoogleStore? Or does their app work with Android? I have been told only Apple phones work.”

Yes, and no. The middle button will work for play, next, and previous, but the volume will not work. That is a patented Apple feature. But you can use apps to make the middle button do what you want it to do.
