“How does this system get its audio signal? RCA?, HDMI?. Or optical? Is this an independent system? I want to listen to my sound and feed the headphone system at the same time. The Headphones are for a def member of the family who need higher SPL.”

RCA. It comes with adapters for headphone jacks but there is no optical audio interface. Yes it is independent. I could still hear the TV speakers with the headphones on. The headphones still work with the TV muted or turned all the way down. You can get adapters for optical audio, which is what I had to to do and I was not disappointed with that setup.
