On the robot there is a cartridge that pops out with a squeeze trigger that opens the compartment. I rinse mine after two cleanings to keep it fresh and clean. On the docking station there is a bigger cartridge that slides out. There is a push button that opens up the top of the container to empty it. It is very easy and you don’t even get your hands dirty.

Push in the button on top of "base station". Box will pop out of the side. Remove the box and open box to empty dirt.
