Not very often. The laser guidance seems to see walls well. However, it does bump against a lot of other items, such as table and chair legs and things on the floor. Wires and cords are a particular issue. It will also try to go over some short items, and can get itself stuck. You really need to prepare the room(s) a bit before you use it.

no it has a little sensor that sticks out and will stop to turn and redirect :)
