• You need to pull hard on the filter bag. I had difficulty too when it was my first use.

• Hello Sandy, We are happy to assist you with your inquiry about the Shark® Bagless Cordless Hand Vac. To empty the dust cup, press the dust cup release button and pull out the dust cup. Remove the dust cup filter to be able to empty the debris from the dust cup. If you would like you can rinse the dust cup filter in water. If you do this, let it dry completely before replacing it back into the dust cup. Do not wash it in a washing machine or use a hair-dryer or other forced air to dry it, air-dry only.
