My shark ion robot keeps stopping and flashing the error that indicates there is something wrong with the main brush roller but when I inspect there is no visible issue. Help!!! null

I had this issue and I fixed it! My vacuum would just stop, give his little error message, and the DOCK and SPOT lights would just blink and I would have to go and press clean again. 

All i could find online were people saying to clean out the main brush, but we had cleaned it multiple times and it never fixed. Until we took the little piece off the end of the brush (accidentally) and there was a huge wad of fur around the pin! 

We cleaned all the hair out of that little spot and we haven't had a problem since

OMG! mine is a year old and has been doing this for months. It runs for couple minutes and just stops. I literally have to keep pushing the clean button (nothing jammed and it’s not full). I would get less exercise going to the gym! Done with this and every other shark product. To expensive for this to be happening to EVERYONE!

I had the same issue with a Shark I had for about 6 months. Usually the distressed signal happens for one of two reasons: the robot is stuck and cannot move, or something has caused the main cylinder brush to lock up. The machine would run for a couple minutes before making the distressed chime, but when I looked nothing was there. Since I use the robot to clean the common area where my pets are I decided to pop out the cylinder brush and clean it (I noticed some fur had wrapped around one of the gears). Once I cleaned this out the robot ran fine once again... hope this helps!

Okay, so I had this problem with my Shark 6 months after I bought it. Tried everything... New brushes, cleaning, etc.. I finally got sick of this thing running for 1 min and stopping so I opened it up and took out the brush motor and gear. What I found was under the yellow square tip that physically spins the main brush roll was dog hair wrapped around the gear. The yellow square cap is actually removable and is just tightly pushed onto the motor gear (a small flathead around the edge should pry it off). I also noticed the bearings were very tight because when I tried to manually spin the gear, but thought it was normal. Ran the Shark after putting it all back together and it kept going for a couple days before it stopped again. I took off the main brush and was able to take the yellow square cap off without dismantling the entire Shark again and just dumped some oil right on top of the metal underneath (this is the gear bearing). I assume the dog hair/dust has dried out the bearing and making the gears hard to turn and motor overwork causing it to shutoff eventually. 

Clean out the hair under the yellow square cap and dump some oil down there. It’s been running for a few weeks so far. Hope this helps.

How I fixed mine with the same issue:
Pull the roller out. Remove any hair you can find. Spray WD40 into the side of the brush roll that spins (with the metal tip) and spin that until it spins freely. Then out your roller back in and it is good to go!

We have had our shark for a little over a year and ours has been starting and stopping a couple minutes later. There is nothing in the brushroll it just keeps giving the same flashing error. We called Shark and they told us it’s out of warranty and we could buy a new one for 30% off. No way would I spend another dollar on any shark product.

I called customer service and the warranty ran out in January of 2019. It's now 4/19/19, and they are offering me a new one at $250.00. Obviously this is an issue with Shark. I am so upset I will never purchase another Shark product again! 1 year and 3 months! An expensive piece of household equipment like this @ $350.00 new should last much much longer.

Shark VR750 brush error fix

This is what was wrong with my Shark. 

It would run for about one minute then shut down and flash a code for “brush roll is jammed” (spot and dock both flash).

I first thought it was just the hair that had worked it’s way into the hole around the drive shaft the moves the brush.

What I did was take the thing apart, it not hard to do if you have the right tools. What you will need is a standard Phillips head screwdriver, and longer flat head screwdriver, a number T5 and T15 Torx head screwdriver. (You may not need to take the Shark apart to do the fix that I did. It might be possible to just pry the little yellow plastic drive cog off with the flathead screwdriver and pull the hair off.)

Started by loosening the two screws the hold the battery cover in place and removing the battery on the bottom side of the Shark,Then us wing the T15 removing the 9 T15 screws on the bottom side of the Shark.

Then use the T5 to remove the 7 small screws that hold the plastic trim to the front bumper on the Shark,

Then you can open up the Shark from the top by removing the top cover.

 Using the Phillips screwdriver remove the silver screw that hold the brush drive motor in place, and disconnect the wire from the circuit board. After that the motor can be removed.

Then use the flathead screwdriver to slowly pry the yellow drive cog off the black housing. At this time getting all the hair off was easy! But that still wasn’t the issue. I noticed that the shaft didn’t spin. It was stuck in place so I removed the 4 silver screws on the backside of the black plastic motor housing. Using the flathead screwdriver I slowly pried the black wheel off the shaft on the inside. Then I say what what the real issues as. The barring was RUSTED! I sprayed a little WD40 on the baring and let it sit for a few minutes and took pair of pliers to grab on the shaft and while holding the housing started to try and move the shaft. It was stiff at first but after a little working at it, it started to move freely. I used a paper towel to remove the brown WD40 and repeated that step a few times until the WD40 stopped getting brown. I squirted a small amount of WD40 on one more time.
Put it back together and the Shark has worked fine ever since.

This is an issue with the Robot itself. I had the same problem, error message and there was nothing in the main roller. I've had my robot for 2 years, only cleaned the dining room. When I called Shark, the remedy was to give me 30% off a new robot because my warranty expired. Why would I spend another couple of hundred dollars on a product that is going to malfunction after 2 years?? It is obviously a known defect of the Shark ion Robot.

I kept removing the hair buildup around the ends of the main roller but to no avail. I realized the roller with the yellow ends which has one end that is like a bearing is removable by gently grasping with pliers and pulling off. I had lots of dirt and hair built up under there. My Shark is an R87. It has been doing the same thing; I thought it was due to higher humidity. This morning it was evident that we had a problem. I read all the notes below and cleaned out the roller plus both ends thoroughly. Great tips! BUT, it still would stop and alarm after a few seconds of work. We got out the original paperwork after my husband noticed one of the brushes wasn't turning. On this model there are two brushes that snap on, and can be snapped off. We snapped both brushes off and found that the one that wasn't working had hair/lint etc coiled inside it. We cleaned it thoroughly and Wa la!! It's running all over the house cleaning like a charm. I call it 'Charles' as it's my butler. :>) Hope this helps.

Usually the problem will be with the brushes or the roller . They get clogged up with hair, wire, string, ribbon and rubber bands, or stuff like that. Cut any of that stuff off and get rid of it. Brushes and rollers should be replaced on schedule. However another problem is with the electronic eyes on this thing. There are four of them. And they get clogged up and can't see what they're doing. Use a Q-tip to clean them off. If you want to prevent that problem, stop using that powder stuff you put all over your carpets and everything. That powder will blind your robot.

Check and see if the little brushes are moving. If both of them are moving then it should be the main roller or the front wheel. I tried for two days to fix it and found that the little brush was stuck and not moving correctly. I ran it and noticed the little front brushes where moving intermittently. Took the front brushes off and reseated them pointing the same way. It fixed my issue. Hopefully this will help others.

I have 2 Shark Ion Robots R75 and first time one of them did this to me where it would stop and beep flashing red uggg .. I did everything clean all brushes, filters and still would do it so last thing I did was the dirt bin out and went in garage grabbed my air nozzle and blew 100psi of air in through and in the suction hole and all white dust and whatever what was clogging it blew out of it .. and after that never had problems again , because now I know what to do when it does it, just blow 100psi of air in the suction hole and blow all sensors and creases you see... hopes this helps someone

The problem is all the sensors on the machine to stop clogging problems from occurring. 
I had the same problem, did same cleaning etc., still works for less than a minute, flashing lights.

After watching a video where someone showed the side brushes housing got clogged I removed both and found
dirt and thread around the circle. Cleaned out and works fine again.

Here's a tip; I use Walmart Dry Sweeper refills cut into strips and inserted below the yellow filter as a pre-filter that
 catches the dust and is easily thrown away. Saves the filter needing replacement. But when too dirty,
 I also cut a rectangular insert to hold the refill in place from a corrugated plastic like they use for voting signs.

I removed the wheel, pulled out the hair and washed it. I knew immediately that In fixed the problem of stopping every minute. The robot sounds better. Try it!

I looked at the roller on my Shark and it looked ok. There didn't seem to be much hair or string tangled on it, but then I looked closer. I popped out the roller and the hair and dirt was stuck on the ends. It was embedded so deep I had to use an ice pick to dig all of the debris out. After that it worked like a new one!!

I discovered the same issue with the hair around the brush roller. Recently, even though I cleaned out the roller, and the base where it sits, it was doing the frequent stopping. Today, I snapped off the two front brushes and unclogged under them....it's working again!

Similar to others, I removed the brush and cleaned out the tip which was so full of hair it looked like a fabric bushing. It finally started throwing the same error even after cleaning the tip so I pulled the machine apart to get to the other side with the motor that drives the brush. Inside that is a gear that is not accessible unless completely disassembled that was also full of hair. It seems to be working now but afraid it's nearing end of life and it's not that old. I'll try some WD-40 in the tip and hope that helps. I bought this because we've loved our regular Shark vacuums but I'll probably opt for a Roomba if I ever buy another robot vacuum.

Once I removed the roller, I found out that my own “junk” had “junked” up the roller. Once I thoroughly cleaned the roller, it worked like a champ. My “baby shark” is cleaning like a pro again!

Just found what may be causing your issues ! Pull the roller out , one end has square hole the other end is round. The round end cap will pop off . There was all kinds of string , fur and fuzz wrapped around the shaft . For a small area it sure was a lot of stuff in there !

To reiterate what several others here have said, this can commonly be solved by removing hair wrapped around the metal head at the end of the roller. This requires no tools beyond tweezers. I used needlenose pliers. I tried a couple times and thought I'd gotten it all, but after nearly a year of use the hair can get so tightly wound up beneath the bolt it can be very difficult to see. Just get in there and tear it out, maybe apply a little WD-40, and you're off to the races.

So I took the roller brush out cleaned all hair off. The took off ( mine was blue) bearing holder and removed huge amount of hair there. Then used tips and cleaned all sensors. It didn’t work still. Then I removed the 2 big wheels and cleaned hair out of there but what I found was the sensor was completely black next to the wheel. Then after putting it all back together by our savior is vacuuming like a champ. So my guess was very dirty internal wheel sensor.

On top of cleaning the pet hair out of the drive spindle, there was extreme and excessive pet hair build up inside the retractable drive wheels. I believe there is a switch in there, that the hair was preventing from being made to engage the brush. Anyway, it works fine now. Hint: compressed air is your friend! This machine was on its way to the train station!

Solved!!  Thank you all for you comments and ideas.  Here's the trick to the stuck brushroll error and you don't have to take the whole thing apart.  All brushes and rolls need to be cleaned THOROUGHLY.  By this I mean:  1) take out the front roller ball and clean dust and debris out of there.  2) Take out the main brushroll.  3) clean the brushroll itself.  4) on the end with the prongs, pry off the top with the little roller bearing in it and clean that thoroughly.  This is where mine was FULL of hair all wrapped around the bearing housing.  I think this was the main problem.  5) on the flat end of the brushroll there is a screw.  Remove it and clean there if necessary.  6)  On the machine where the flat end of the brushroll goes onto the square driveshaft cover, pry off the square plastic driveshaft cover and clean under there.  7) take off each of the side brushes and clean under them.  Took me most of the day to figure this out but it WORKED!!

Everyone that’s saying they’re trash and won’t buy one again. Just read the comments and do what they say. It took a screw driver and 10 minutes to clean all the rollers, sensors, and wheels and it works like new. Sure mine was 4 months old and it freaked me out that we couldn’t get the error to go away right away. But a little research and the knowledge it cleans dirt and that dirt may clog parts of it go a long way.

Had the same issue ...cleaning the brush and everything else I found online didn't work...took the top cover apart and unplug the brush drive motor and vacuum motor connector and plugged them direct to a 9 volt battery and let them run for a few seconds each , plugged them back in and the vacuum worked fine for about two weeks after I put it together...then it happened again ...Did the same procees and it has been working fine ever since...not sure if this is the right fix but it worked for me.

Check the end of the roller brush that's on the right-hand side when the machine is upside down. Use a pair of pliers to see if it will turn. If not, give it a little more pressure, That part should spin freely.

I have a *brand new* roller brush that I had installed when this first started happening, and it was bound up right out of the box. So, don't assume if you added a new brush that all will be well. 

Anyway, my little buddy (we call him "Bruce") is now tooling around the house picking up dog hair again.

I had one and liked it so I bought 2 more (3 story house, got tired of moving it from floor to floor). Then the problems started. My first one crashed completely & I can't even get it to turn on. The second one has the same issue described here, it runs for 10 inches or so and stops, & gives me the (!) and red flashing. I cleaned EVERYTHING, even opened it up to see if the main wheels were jammed. It is SO clean, but won't work. My model does not have the yellow piece, so the one thing I can't get to is the shaft that turns the spindle brush, even after removing as many pieces that I could (lots of allen screws!) . If they designed a vacuum that quits working when dirt gets into areas that the consumer can't access, Shark vacuums have issues that the company needs to address. I bought three and was burned twice. I'm switching to another brand.

I have a solution! I cleanned brush, got new brush, called company said I can buy a refurbish one. Just clean your brush super ocd, and lube (I used WD40) the inside of the robot where the brush connects into the robot. It seems like over time the friction builds up due to all the stuff our robot picks up. Hope this helps!

So, i appreciate the submissions on this problem...but i have only had my Shark for ONE DAY and it is doing this. Today when it turned on (had it set automatically), it ran 2 minutes and stopped. Since it has stopped 3 times. I checked the bin, and it has barely anything. This is so unacceptable. The whole idea of buying one that can be programmed i s so that the floor is clean when I get home. If i hadn't been here, it would have just sat there, all day.

Yesterday for it's first clean, i had to restart it 3 times, because it went home to dock, and there was still stuff all over the floor.

Note: up until this week i was running a Roomba 700 series, which finally died after3+ mostly problem free years....this is not off to a good start!

Okay, one thing that people are missing is, one the end of the roller is a rubber cover, it's there to stop hair etc getting into the roller, it doesn't, pull the cover off and take out any hair that has gotten in there.

I had the same problem - was even getting the error after I completely removed the roller brush. The error message on my phone was "Robot's brushroll got stuck while trying to clean. Remove any debris from around the brushroll." I tried everything I could think of before finally calling their customer support. Before even talking to an agent the recorded greeting suggested that I turn off the unit for at least 10 seconds and turn it back on some distance away from the dock. Once I did this, I got the error one more time but it started cleaning again without me doing anything and hasn't stopped since. I am a little concerned that I am already having issues with this since it's only about 3 months old - but it's pretty darned effective! The handheld vac is pretty good for small cleanups too.

The yellow wheel had indications of trapped dirt. I took it apart and found a tremendous amount of dirt and hair trapped. I hope all of these solutions will keep it running problem free

I actually had to unscrew all the little tiny screws and detach the cover from the base. There was a bunch of fiber/fur/lint on the surfaces of the electronic chips and around the electric motor. I'm guessing the stuff was acting like a blanket and the motor was getting hot and shutting down. I used canned/compressed air to blow it all out in every possible nook. It works great now. I did need to get some tiny specialty screwdriver heads, but obviously it's a whole lot cheaper than a new machine. (Dont lose the screws! They're pretty small!)

I had this problem. About once every couple of months it's a good idea to remove the main brush and clean the ends. ALSO remove the little brushes that sweep dirt to the main brush. They accumulate a lot of dirt, hair, etc, under between them and the base of the vacuum. After the dirt is removed I apply a bit of silicon spray to the moving parts. Doing both of these maintenance items should fix the problem.

We were having the same problem. We put W40 on it but it didn't seem to make much difference. Then we realized there is an on/off button on the side of the robot. Turn the button off for about 10 seconds and then turn back on. It is like it reset it and it has been running since.

At the end of the brushroll is a yellow box that holds in your brush roll and spins the brush. If its flipped with the spinning brushes next to you and the brush roll exposed this box will be on the right. Get yourself a metal toothpick and stick the hook area inside that spot. Clean it out in that area and dig deep inside it. One of the downfalls of this unit is they didnt make anything to block animal or people hair from getting in that spot so the hair gets tangled. You might have to do it once a month or so depending on pets and use.

Mine has been downing this for while now. It will run for about 90 sec.then stop and beep. After many attempts to fix it i finally beat the beast. Mine had hair wrapped around all the brushes and the front wheel. To remove the outer brushes and the front wheel just pull straight up. To remove the wheel from the housings push it with your thumb from the backside and it will pop out, WATCH OUT FOR THE NYLON WASHER ON THE FRONT WHEEL PEG!!!! A pick of some sort will help get into those tight spot. Reassemble and watch thing go. Happy hunting :)

We are all having the same problems. I just ordered a new one. After seeing that it wasn't only me. I may have made my decision to early to purchase anothe shark robo vac. My vac is only two years old but it had worked up until a few days ago. I programmed it to clean 3 days Mon. Wed. and Fri. Being away from home sometimes another state,it worked great.I have tried everything and it just won't opereate correctly.

Mine did the same thing. I had to take roller out and lubricate both ends. Also when it self empties...it does not clean the filter in dust bin as advertised which cuts down on suction as it builds up. Also mine only has 15 min of run time before it dies when cleaning hardwood floors. It rarely makes it back to base to recharge. Also does not run in organized rows...sometimes it starts going on an angle. Partway through a room so it misses areas. I have the new app but that did not help. Wish I never bought it. Had to remove rugs with thick nap as it bogged it down
 Also have to put throw rugs on coffee tables and dining room chairs on top of table. Takes half an hour to move things around to be out of way of robot and it still does a lousy job

This is an issue with ALL robot vacuums. The Shark vac is the best bang for the buck. Purchase the sparepart/repair kit on amazon (might be available through Best Buy. You need the clean and replace the brush every so often (I run the vacuum every day and have a dog with long white fur that gets all over everything). To fix the issue with the doc light and spot light you need to do a little robot surgery. Remove the yellow brush guard, take out the brush, there is a little yellow square piece (looks a lot like a lego) that spins the brush. Use a flat object (I used a screwdriver) to pry it off, there is a little notch on the piece of plastic if you can find it. Underneath you will find a tiny metal piece that in my case was wrapped with fur. Remove the fur, replace the yellow plastic lego like piece (needs some force), replace the brush, replace the yellow guard. it should be good to go. Note: I recommend you dump the collection bin/any dust or fur before removing the brush. I think it is also important to note that shark Ninja will probably tell you to buy another vacuum. You do not need to do that, just keep up with the maintenance. It took about 9 months of heavy use (sometimes twice a day) and quarterly brush replacements to get to this point. ALL robot vacuums need to have this regular maintenance (every few months for the brush, probably once a year for the fine cleaning), you do not need to replace the entire vacuum. I hope this helps, this vacuum is a superstar!!!!

I tried the solution offered by sspeed. It has worked for me. I have a Shark Ion Robot RV750. It would stop during cleaning operation and the Clean light would remain blue. No error message. But if I tried to restart it, it would quickly beep twice and not move. First I cleaned the gear on the end cap attached to the roller by popping it out with a small flat tip screw driver. I didn’t have silicone lubricant so I used sewing machine oil. There was hair and dust there. After cleaning and oiling that I looked for the plastic square piece speed described. It looks a little different on the model I have. the black square on mine is yellow but I carefully pried it off as sspeed instructed. I would have never known I could get that piece off. sure enough, there was a dust accumulation there. I cleaned it and oiled as instructed and carefully replaced it. When I put the roller back in and turned it on, it works fine THANKS SO MUCH,!

i called Shark and they told me i had a bad roller. Wrong answer. My roller was froze tight......would not turn by hand. First, clean the brush. Spray WD40 into metal part on roller. When that frees, then pull end cap off the other side. Pull the hair out and spray WD40 on gear. After a few minutes turn the roller by hand. My first try i forgot to put anything inside the end cap. After trying a new roller (i bought a second shark just like the first and used the new roller)........made no difference so i decided to go back and spray that gear. Worked like a charm. Sharkie is back in action and i have a new one to relieve the first sharkie. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

I FINALLY figured out how to fix this! There is a sensor under the small front wheel. You can pull that wheel out and there will be a bunch of hair and dust under there. Clean that out and you're good to go!

Take the yellow square nut off with a flat screw driver. It comes off without opening the vacuum. Clean out the area with the tool provided. Then apply some 3 in one oil and replace yellow square circle. Problem solved!

I had this issue too, but was determined to fix it.

I took the roller out and cleaned hair and string out of the gears, the square connector, every where that I saw hair and string.

I was shocked how much had accumulated.

Using tweezers works best.

I’ve had to do this twice, but both times it worked.

Just like a “traditional” vacuum, maintenance is required.
