There's a pair of external fine mesh screen filters, one on each side, that slide easily up and out. You can brush them off, just like you would a lint trap on a dryer, and slide them back in. I feel like the "check filter" message comes up every few months or so to let me know the unit's detecting lower airflow. It's not onerous to take care of. The HEPA filter inside can't be cleaned, but it does last for a few years. They promise five; I got three out of mine in a fairly dusty home.

The HEPA filter lasts up to five years, while the dust filters will alert you when they need cleaning. You can clean the dust filters with a vacuum on low or a soft brush, and rinse them with room temperature water if a deeper clean is needed.
