I'm also very, very sensitive to scents, so ignore everything everyone else said, they are incorrect and obviously not sensitive to fragrances. The odor neutralizer dial comes inside a pouch with the scented cartridge already in it. It's so disgusting smelling and gave me a migraine. Since the cartridge and dial are touching, no matter how much you clean the dial, with alcohol, oil, more alcohol, whatever, it will stink and release smells. If you buy any Shark odor neutralizer vacuum and are sensitive to smells, do NOT open the odor pouch. I'm warning you, do not do it. Throw it away unopened. You can put tape over where the dial goes and then the suction will be fine. Ideally go to Shark's website and order a replacement odor neutralizer dial (not cartridge, the actual physical dial) that does not come packaged with a scent cartridge, and then you can inset the dial into the vacuum and vacuum scent free. My god the cartridge smells awful too. It took two days for the scent to disappear just from having touched the dial. If you're wondering what it smells like, imagine Old Spice 30 years ago. I find it disgusting and regressive that they put the scent cartridge in with the dial. Absolutely no thought given to people who are sensitive to chemicals and fragrances. Anyone who says it doesn't smell much or you can just throw the scent cartridge away is insensitive, ignorant and doesn't understand chemical sensitivity and sensitivity to fragrances. It sticks onto the dial and you will need to either keep that area taped up or buy a new dial. If Shark reads this: put the cartridge in a pouch, and the dial with everything else, do not package them together, it's literally insulting to be inundated with fragrances you did not elect and have parts contaminated with fragrances.

If there was any indication that "odor neutralizer" meant fragrance, it would have been a deal breaker for me. Congrats to Shark for fooling me. Ommissions are the same as lies! It is a very heavy fragrance and I became extremely nautious after opening the package. After reading in the manual that "Odor dial must be installed for vacuum to function properly." I had a bit of a mental breakdown about wasting $400 on a vacuum I couldn't use! But rereading, I saw the next line that says "Remove odor cartridge from dial if you don't want the benefits of Odor Neutralizer Technology" So, I removed the fragrance part and threw it away (inside a sealed ziplock!!) Luckily, the vacuum seems to work fine with just the cap/dial piece. Like others have said, the cap is really stinky, but I didn't notice the smell in the house after using the vacuum with the fragrance capsule removed.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You can remove the scent cartridge from the dial cover. I did that and screwed the cover back on. I also did NOT like the scent at all. The residual scent is there but not strong at all. I expect it to dissipate with time.

I agree with the person who likened it to 30 year old Old Spice... its like time traveling back to being trapped in a station wagon after your dad marinated himself in Old Spice on a hot Sunday and will not roll down the windows. Big chem bomb. Yuck.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.We would like to let you know that the odor neutralizer cartridge does not have to be in the unit. However you will need to be sure that the Odor Neutralizer Technology Dial is secure in teh floor nozzle.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Thank goodness I read this thread first. I watched a you tube video so I would like exactly what I was looking at. Used nitrile gloves and had a plastic bag that seals ready. Tried very hard not to inhale, and still could feel my throat closing up after two inadvertent whiffs. Sealed it in the bag and put the part that fits in the vacuum, without the cartridge. Hoping I can use it and that whatever is left on the empty holder part dissipates quickly. People who aren't sensitive to these chemical smells have no idea how horrible it can be. Remember back in the 70's when people in department stores would spray you with perfume as you walked by? OMG. Hope I like the vacuum!
