• Hi Lynne, this may sound basic, but I made this mistake. The unit won't lift off if the cord is wound up around both brackets... the way you're supposed to wind the cord after you're finished vacuuming. Also, I put my foot on the base as I lift up from both the handle and the top of the canister. It should come off that way. Good luck.
