“Why the annoying lettering/messages while power is off? When I turn the power off, there is spastic lettering all over the place "Hello..." " USB..." . Is this normal or is mine defective? Thanks”

Once you set the time, the continuous display stops. It comes in "sales mode" so features are continuously displayed until you set the time.
