To be clear, Yes, you need a Roku account, but it is free. What you pay for are the channels that are not free. There are lots of channels that don't cost any money available via Roku. Netflix and Hulu, for instance, you need to have a paid subscription to, independent of Roku. You can also access HBO, Showtime and Starz if you have a subscriptoin to those via cable that you might already have at your house on another tv with a cable box or at another house of yours. You don't have to have a cable box then to see your premium movie channels...just do it thru roku.
