You are supposed to put the Subwoofer on the floor.
The shelf unit and speakers can go on a shelf. However, the directions suggest 4" of space on the sides and back of the main unit for heat dissipation. So you need to add that in, if you are thinking about putting on a shelf.
The speaker cables are not really long enough to put far away from the unit. You can get more speaker wire and extend them. However, depending on how far you want to go, you would need to do your research and determine the correct gauge needed to extend the wire. You can't use the same gauge that is on the speakers if you want to extend a really long distance.
