“Is there a way to have the set fire up to HDMI1 when turned on rather than going to the "home" page where you need to scroll across and choose it? My mom is 93 and it is confusing her. Would be much easier on her if it defaulted to HDMI1 when turned on.”

Yes, in the settings under Source, you should be able to set preference to most recent/on device. I was able to have my Apple TV become the first screen that pops up and turn the TV off and On using my Apple TV. Sorry that I cannot remember the exact steps, but it is possible.
