Hello and Thank you for your interest in the Singing Machine Groove XL. This model is from our Classic HOME Karaoke Series. To see the lyrics display on the built-in monitor, you either have to be playing karaoke CDs (aka CDG's) or you can download karaoke videos in the file format of MP3+G onto a USB Flash Drive (Sold Separately). For a larger view, you can also connect the machine to a TV monitor via an HDMI cable (Sold Separately). We hope this information answers your question.
