• This question is answered elsewhere, but just to repeat: the card has a chip of its own, like the kind you might have at work enter your building or office. The chip is powered by the scanning device, which charges it while scanning it. After a certain amount of scans, the "battery" component of it is exhausted (just like you can only charge your laptop a certain number of times). Then it needs replacement.
