My daughter is on the spectrum and uses these for both listening to music and "turning off the world" as she puts it. She said you can use the noise canceling without having to listen to music.

They do muffle noises pretty well for lower sounds like droning hums without sound not as effective with high pitched sounds and you can clearly hear someone speaking to you next to you. With sound playing through them it blocks about 95-100% of all outside sound. They are my favorite ones I've used so far. I've been using my pair about a year and a half so far and still works as well as the first day.
