They help reduce noise. I just wouldn't classify they as noise canceling.

These earbuds are definitely "passive noise cancelling" but not "active noise cancelling". Passive noise cancelling is the effect you get just by something in your ear canal like those squishy ear plugs you press into your ear. Active noise cancelling is the electronic type where the device uses microphones to monitor surrounding sounds and then emit an opposite sound frequency to cancel out those sounds.

And I operate heavy equipment with them on, but on a low enough volume to hear around me, or you can always plug one side in your left or right ear too...
