That's what I do st the office and have no trouble using them like this so that they last my whole 8 hours of work without having to stop listening in order to recharge. I usually do this at the office anyway so that I can hear things around me and music at the same time. Coworker's don't even notice I am listening to a mysic. For calls, it only uses one of the two automatically and when call ends music returns to both headphones automatically as well.
