To my knowledge, depending on building codes, enclosures are used for fire code, or in residential for dampening any sound that may go through to the room above speaker location.

They do not completely eliminate sound transferring from room to room; however, they will reduce it significantly. Retrofit enclosures are optional and not required for this speaker.
