Unless you want access to the controls, this unit does not need to be outdoors, or in plain sight for that matter. I have this unit for my speakers around my pool. The unit is in my laundry room in the middle of the house, next to the WiFi. I used 14 gauge in-wall/burial-rated speaker wire to run through the attic... down the outside wall of the house... and underground to the pool. I'm using two sets (4 total speakers) of the Polk Patio 200 speakers in parallel. Amp is running in mono.

With that being said, Sonos does recommend that Amp is not just protected from water but also extreme heat and cold. Also, we do not recommend that the unit is placed in a metal enclosure as this is adversely effect your wireless performance of the unit.
