“I'm sure i can connect the TV and DVD player to the sonos system but is there a separate connection for a CD player via optical output? Secondly, with this system, my amp w/5.1 speaker system becomes obsolete or is there any need for the amp?”

You will no longer need the amp. These speakers have built in amplification. Not sure about the cd player. I play music from my phone and that works great.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Thank you for your question. The Sonos Arc connects to a TV using either an HDMI eARC/ARC connection or using the optical adapter. Your DVD player would connect to the TV and then that sound signal would be routed to the Sonos Arc. The DVD player would not connect directly to the Sonos Arc. The Sonos Arc would also not connect to a CD player as there is only one input on the soundbar which is the HDMI eARC/ARC port. For music playback the Sonos Arc using the home's wifi to stream music content. You are correct that the Sonos Arc would replace a third-party 5.1 amplifier and speakers.
