No; you can setup a SONOS system using only one or more PLAY speakers. Using the iTunes, Android, or PC applications you can stream many music services, and your local music library to the SONOS system. The Connect gives you two added capabilities. - The Line Out can connect to your existing stereo system, letting SONOS stream to your system's speakers. - And, the Line In allows any analog source to play through the entire SONOS system. For instance, the line out of your receiver could be connected to this input, and any record played on your turntable can play through the entire SONOS system. I have an Amazon Echo Dot connected to the Connect analog input and have voice control over what songs play through the entire SONOS system. Note, for the voice control with the Echo Dot you will need a compatible streaming music service.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Connect allows you to hook up Sonos to an existing audio system, you must have your own speakers and amp. The Sonos system is very robust for streaming audio, I use it for music I've ripped to a hard drive as well as multiple streaming services, Napster, Sirius/Xm, pandora, Amazon prime music, and others. You do need an existing internet connection, but it will run parallel to your home network.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You don't need the Connect to stream music. Just a Player 1, 2, or 3.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There are amplifiers that stream also but the Connect actually works better because of the wifi streaming that it offers. We opted for the Connect because we have existing wired speakers and the Connect allows us to expand with SONOS wifi speakers and to still use our wired ones if we opt to.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It just depends on your existing stereo system and what features it has.
