“When not wall mounted and placed in front of the TV, can the Sonos Playbar be laid flat so it is not so tall and potentially blocking a portion of the TV, or does it need to be placed tall?”

I HAVE MINE LAID FLAT AND IT SOUNDS THE SAME AS WHEN I STAND IT UP

The play bar should be laid flat when not wall mounted.

I have mine laying flat on my mantel, and it works great, fills the room with sound. The speakers are angled for different mounting positions

Yep. Mine is in front of the TV with the power light/switches to the right.
