It is a wireless / Bluetooth system, so yes you do need WIFI.

Yes, this works independently as a soundbar using the optical port in your TV. No internet is needed for this feature. You do need an internet connection to use the Sonos App and stream music to your playbase.

The base connects to the television with the provided optical cord. No additional connection is needed, but to use its full functionality, I connect to the base with Sonos using wireless.
