I believe so. I have my Samsung UN65JS8500 connected to it by way of the HDMI ARC. If I turn the TV on by itself, then I only have TV sound. When I change the speaker input on the TV to RCV, then I get the RCV sound instead of the TV speakers.

Yes, you can certainly use the pass thru, while leaving the receiver in stand-by mode and you can easily turn external audio(speaker system) off and just use tv speakers. Hope this helps!

Yes it has HDMI standby "through". It might be defaulted to "off" to reduce power consumption, so just go into the menu to change it.
