This may be an excellent, and highly versatile choice. On the NEX-7 (which I owned previously and it is a fantastic camera), this full-frame 24-70 lens behaves like a 36-105mm lens, which is a super useful range (36mm = modest wide angle and 105mm = short telephoto and is very handy for framing portraits, etc). Lastly, if your son later buys one of Sony’s full-frame cameras, this lens is engineered to natively support the larger sensor. As for this lens vs others—at its current price (especially if still on sale)—this lens is an absolute bargain. Zeiss has been making camera lenses for quite a long time and is synonymous with excellence. While there sre newer, sharper lenses out there, this lens has beautiful, natural color and renders images that have a special quality to them. It is also such a compact lens, it is likely to be the lens that actually stays on the camera and gets a lot of use! I own this lens and would purchase it again, if needed, without hesitation.
