If I'm understanding you right yes you would lose quality in both 3d audio (atmos) quality and general audio quality. What you should do if you can only use 2 is mount one as close to the ceiling as possible above your center channel and one in the same place but directly behind you. If you can run 4 then I'd put 1 on each side wall. If you can run 6 like I do then put 1 above each tower (again close to the ceiling), 1 above each rear channel and 1 on each side wall. No matter how many you have or where you want to position them I highly recommend you mount them as close to the ceiling as possible for good 3d audio whether it's atmos or another spatial format.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The calibration settings on my receiver show it mounted either in top of the L&R towers, or in the left and right wall above the TV, angled downward towards the viewer. I think you won’t lose the ATMOS effect, but if you want the best experience, then calibrating the sound will be really important.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. They can ether sit atop of existing speakers or be wall mounted I set mine in a 5.2.4 configuration so a Dolby enabled Atmos add on top of my front and surround speakers Exact speaker placement is a individual preference so experiment for your particular environment.
