I, too, wish I knew. Does the KDL-40W650D Sony smart tv have a higher quality processor than the KDL-40R350D non-smart TV? I do know from experience that the 350D had a beautiful picture with excellent and natural color when I had it. That surely is the case with the 650D. So, if you don't need or want a smart TV, the 350D should be a good choice. That I know of, it's the only 40" non-smart TV that Sony is making.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you want to connect your TV to the internet (such as Google or Netflix) you need a Smart TV. If you only need to watch cable TV or with an antenna, then a regular non-Smart TV is great!! As far as the image and sound, they are the same, as long as both are rated the same. For example, if both are rated 1080 HD, then both are the same as far as image is concerned.

It is an Android system and I'm a Mac person so it took me awhile to adjust. My internet speed is 50, my Smart TV is about 30' away from my router and I have no signal problems and I think that is in part due to the good electronics in the TV. You operate all features from one remote. My non-smart Sony is used with an Amazon FireStick and works flawlessly. I purchased the voice activated FireStick remote ($10 more) and that feature makes it even easier to use. So, if you're looking to save money, then I recommend going this route. You can purchase the FireStick for about $60. You will have two remotes using this method, but the FireStick remote is very small. This second tv is on the second floor, even further away from the router and works well.
