As with all newer tv s you will need to amplifly the sound if you looking for loundness. For regular tv watching the speakers are fine. I have my tv connected to my stereo. When i want a louder sound i use the stereo. I dont like sound bars.

If you are extremely picky about sound, then you might consider a sound bar, but, if you buy a Sony XBR49X900E TV, I suggest trying it without a sound bar first. By the way, we are highly impressed with the 4K picture and we couldn’t be happier with the TV and our Best Buy experience.

If you are planning on viewing mostly speech heavy channels like news and so on, they should be fine. For serious movie viewing or music listening I would say its automatic to have a sound bar or home theater sound system.
