There is no screen on the camera itself. It is simple to connect a smartphone or tablet to the camera to use as a live screen and to control the settings, recording functions, modes and playback. Sony also has available a bundle that includes the camera, a small wireless screen including a wrist strap and charger for the screen.
The camera without the housing is dust resistant and splash resistant. With all the ports closed the camera is sealed up from the elements and can handle light rain, snow and sand. As a real world example, it should be fine to use poolside even if a few splashes happen to land on the camera, but do not try to immerse the camera by itself. With the included waterproof housing the camera can be used underwater or in other extreme elements.
