Hi AL, thanks for inquiring about our X90J BRAVIA XR Full Array LED TV. The TV itself has great sound. The X90J uses an ACOUSTIC MULTI-AUDIO speaker type – Two sound positioning tweeters on the sides of the TV elevate the soundstage, enabling sound to follow the action for a truly immersive experience. An external sound bar enhances the viewing experience and I recommend purchasing one for a TV of this stature. Sound bar's are competitively priced and affordable. The built in sound exists but lacks the kind of depth and enjoyment a sound bar brings.

Yes. These newer Tv's are made with the poorest quality speakers which is done to force you to buy external speakers. Nothing is made like they used to be.
