Hey Bg, The remote can connect to control various things such as your cable box, audio receiver, etc. You don't have to buy a Sony soundbar, you can use whatever sound bar you like then program the included Sony TV remove to control the volume of it.

You shouldn't have to use a Sony brand soundbar. Also, there may be a setting or two in the tv that might help make this easier.
