We have cable channels from Spectrum that do broadcast in HD. Works baeutifully on this TV. I'm sure you need to have some form of HD broadcast in HD to receive HD clarity.

I have SD and HD Comcast cable and some UHD 4K over the internet WiFi connection that demonstrates the abilities of this set. I would add, as I did in my review, that this TV DOES upscale Standard Def channels into near-HD quality, just with a slightly smaller picture - but better by FAR than the actual SD TV that it replaced. Same for HD, it upconverts to near-UHD. And as I said, anything you can get or buy over the WiFi can be up to full HDR10, 4K UHD.
