“We are planning to mount this over our fireplace and view from our couch which is about 16-18 feet away. It seems far, but we can see our 10 year old tv just fine. Is the viewing distance/angle okay for this new TV?”

16 to 18 feet is a bit far away for a 55". I would upgrade to at least a 65" for that distance. It's recommended the distance be 3 times the size of the screen.
