“In some listings for this TV XBR55X900E I see in brackets "(2017)". What does this mean: there is newer & older units with the same model # but different specs? If so what are the spec differences between "(2017)" & whatever the alternative is - 2016 18?”

The XBR55900E is a 2017 model - that model did not exist in any prior year, nor will it exist as a future model. The 2017 specifically designates it as being a TV of model year 2017. If you see XBR55X900E with any other year in parentheses, it is incorrect and that would be (for me) all the reason I needed to NOT buy from that retailer.
