“TV remote needs to be pointed directly at TV for the TV to register inputs if I have it up or down it seems like it doesn't pick up any input. Is there something blocking the sensor that I am missing? Plastic was covering sensor but problem persists”

Try replacing the batteries with new ones and good quality ones not dollar store ones. Then go into settings on tv to update the tv software. Yes, then when all is said and done the top of the remote needs to be in line with the front lower part of the TV. I did this with mine and works like a charm. Good luck.
